October 21, 2005

Tiffin, OH- What one might expect out of a Bellevue verse Tiffin matchup at Frost-Kalnow stadium is exactly what everyone got Friday night. The Tiffin Tornadoes brought their hard hitting style and an all to familiar steady rain to last nights game and escaped with a 27-20 victory over the Bellevue Redmen.

Tiffin opened the scoring on their second series after an apparent fumble on a pitch was ruled a incomplete forward pass by the officals. The next play Tornadoes wide-receiver Josh Moore caught a 12-yard touchdown pass to put Tiffin in front. The Josh Smith point after was good and with 8:13 remianing in the opening quarter it was 7-0 Columbian.

The Redmen came back trying to answer the Tiffin score while driving 72-yards on 13 plays to eventually set up 4th and goal from the Columbian 2-yardline. The quick Tiffin defensive front dropped senior tailback Anthony Flores for a 3-yard loss as Columbian took over on downs.

Redmen starting quarterback Jeff DeBlase hyper-extended his ankle when the Tornadoes defense came with heavy pressure and DeBlase would not return to the game.

Midway through the second quarter Tiffin was looking to extend their lead after going 73-yards on 9 plays. The Tornadoes settled for a 3-point field goal and took a 10-0 lead with 5:54 left in the half.

Bellevue marched right down the field on their following possession scoring when Derrick Berberick dashed through the heart of the Tiffin defense from 13-yards out to put the Redmen on the board. Nate Thompson's kick was true and with 3:13 in the half it was 10-7 Tornadoes.

Aided by a 41-yard run by Dusty Krupp, Columbian added a late field goal to take a 13-7 halftime lead.

Bellevue after receiving the second half kickoff went 68-yards on 7 plays for another Redmen touchdown. Senior wide-out David Foos on the receiving end of quarterback Cody Dearth's 28-yard scoring toss gave the Redmen a chance to take their first lead with a successful point after. A low snap and the Redmen never got off the kick leaving the score tied at 20-20 with 9:44 in the third.

Two plays and exactly one minute later Tiffin added six when Moore went 73-yards on the reception to put Tiffin on top. The point after by Smith was good and with 8:44 remaining in the third it was 20-13 Tornadoes.

Midway through the final quarter Derrick Berberick darted and weaved through the Tiffin punt team to go 75-yards on the punt return to make the score 20-19. Thompson's kick sailed through the uprights and with 5:46 remaining in the contest the score was again knotted at 20-20.

Bellevue on their next possession went 39-yards to the Tiffin 41-yardline. On 4th and 4 quarterback Cody Dearth was forced to scramble and came up short of the first down giving the ball back to the Tornadoes on their own 38.

With under 2:00 remaining in regulation it had appeared that Tiffin's headcoach was set to play for overtime with three straight running plays. On the fourth play the unthinkable happened when Krupp took the toss right 60-yards down the Bellevue sidelines for the go ahead score. Smith hit the point after and with 1:08 remaining in the contest it was 27-20, the eventual final.

The Redmen (4-5, 4-2 NOL) head back home to BAF stadium next week to host the Westside Redmen (5-4, 4-2 NOL) of Fostoria while Tiffin (7-2, 5-1 NOL) hosts Shelby (7-2, 5-1 NOL) for the league championship.
