“Redmen offense in high gear defeating Flashes top ranked defense”

October 14, 2005

Bellevue, OH- It was an unseasonable pleasant fall night in Bellevue Friday evening when the Northern Ohio leagues top ranked defense in the form of the Willard Flashes came to town. Much had been said all week on the web of how this Bellevue team could not score or for that matter beat the Willard team.

After a tough loss the previous week the Bellevue boys came out fighting with an offensive display that would put a smile on former Flordia Gators headcoach Steve Spurrier's face.

The Redmen opened up the running game early by throwing the football the first three plays of the game which resulted in 44-yards and two first downs.

Eight plays and 66-yards the Redmen marched as senior wideout Travis Brown hauled in a Jeff DeBlase pass for a Bellevue touchdown. The extra point kick was wide right and with 9:16 in the first quarter it was 6-0 Bellevue.

Willard answered with a score of their own when senior Brandon Oney capped off a nine play 65-yard drive with a 5-yard score. The extra point was good and the Flashes had their first and last lead of the game at 7-6 Willard.

Bellevue moved down to the Willard 12-yardline on nine plays during the following possession. Anthony Flores finished off the drive with a 12-yard scoring run after having 55 all-purpose yards on the series. The 2-point attempt failed and it was 12-7 Bellevue with 2:04 remaining in the opening quarter.

The Redmen defense held strong and senior defensive-back David Foos came up with a huge interception to give the ball back to the Redmen on the Flashes 48-yardline.

Five plays later Flores took it in from 7-yards out for his second score of the evening. Junior receiver Derrick Berberick's 42-yard reception on 3rd and 21 kept the drive alive to setup the Flores score. Again the 2-point attempt failed and the score stood at 18-7 Bellevue at the 10:33 mark of the second quarter.

Bellevue's defense again held forcing the Flashes to go three and out with the Redmen taking over on their own 9-yardline after the punt.

Again it was a sustained drive, this time of 11 plays that netted the Redmen another score when Flores dashed 24-yards to paydirt. The conversion failed and with 3:20 remaining in the half it was 24-7 Bellevue.

The Flashes opened the second half with a six play drive capped by a Oney 6-yard touchdown run. Oney's point after kick failed and it was 24-13 Redmen, 9:36 in the third quarter.

The referee's who were very inconsistent and unfavorable towards the Redmen threw back to back flags on Bellevue for offensive holding which nullified two Berberick touchdowns. The team still managed to find the endzone when junior quarterback Jeff DeBlase took it in from the 1-yardline on the sneak to cap a fourteen play 75-yard drive. The 2-point attempt failed and the score, 30-13 Redmen with 2:10 remaining in the third.

Aided by senior defensive-end Eddie Hupp's 3-yard sack of Willard quarterback Zack Thornton the Flashes again would be forced to punt after going three and out.

The quickest scoring drive for the Redmen was also their last as Flores capped off a six play 72-yard series with a 6-yard touchdown run. The point after kick was good and with 9:15 remaining in the contest it was 37-13 Bellevue.

The Redmen's junior varsity also took part in the action with more than four minutes remaining. Eric Lepley and Mikey Flores both deflected passes, freshmen Markie Brooks came up with a sack and JJ Lepley intercepted a Zack Thornton pass in the endzone to seal Willards fate.

The Redmen (4-4, 3-1 NOL) look to stay in the title chase next week as they travel to Tiffin to take on the Tornadoes (6-2, 3-1 NOL) while the Flashes head to Norwalk to face the 1-7 Truckers.
