“Redmen use everything in their arsenal to cage Tigers”
September 30, 2005
Bellevue, OH- Bellevue, OH- On a night when Jenna Ianello was named Homecoming Queen, the Redmen were sure to give her one "HUGE" gift. Using their special teams, offense and defense, the Redmen suffocated a Galion team still in search of its first N.O.L win this season.
Winning the toss and electing to receive, Galion started the opening drive on their own 26-yardline. The first offensive attempt by Galion was a run by Tommy Javen, good for one yard. However on the next play, a false start penalty would set the Tigers back to 2nd down and 14. Deciding to go with the run again, Javen was stopped for no gain. The Tigers attempted their first pass on 3rd down and 14, and QB Tyle Agin was never able to get the attempt away as he was sacked by Cody Dearth to bring up 4th and 21.
The punting unit was summoned, and Bellevue kick returner David Foos returned the Troy Bright punt 46 yards down to the Galion 4 yard line. After three runs for a total of 3 yards, Bellevue's Anthony Flores on reached pay dirt on fourth down from 1 yard out giving the Redmen a 6-0 advantage. Nate Thompson's extra point attempt was good making it 7-0 Bellevue, with 8:18 remaining in the first.
Galion received the kick off and returned it to the 27-yardline to set up their second offensive series of the night. The first play was a run good for 3 yard's, but the Redmen defense held true again and forced the Tigers on a three and out series. That is when Bellevue's special teams decided to make the most of Troy Bright's second punt of the night.
Bellevue kick returner Derek Berberick received the punt on his own 41-yardline. With a couple of nice blocks Berberick found a seam and ran 59 yards for the second Redmen touchdown of the game. Thompson's second PAT attempt was no good, leaving the score at 13-0 Bellevue with just under four minutes to play, first quarter.
Galion finally started to move the ball on their third possession of the night. Running back Tommy Javen ran three times for a total of 12 yards and a Galion first down. But once again the Redmen defense held firm as Javen was stopped for two straight no gains. Setting up third and 12, Agin attempted his second pass this time throwing an incompletion forcing the Tigers to punt for the third time on the evening. Bright's punt was received, this time by Foos who returned it 55 yards for another Redmen score. However a holding penalty would bring the play back and nullify the score.
Redmen quarterback Jeff Deblase would not let the penalty distract himself or the offense, as he would hook up with Derek Berberick for a 65 yard touch down pass making it 19-0, Bellevue. Bellevue was right on the money on the two point conversion try as Deblase threw to wideout Travis Brown, making the score 21-0 with 2:15 left in the opening frame.
Galion was still unable to put together any type of progressive series, as they again went three and out. Bellevue dodged a bullet by giving the Tigers 5 yards on an offside penalty. The first period ended with the Redmen on top 21-0.
To start the second period Bellevue would fumble on their second play from scrimmage, as Berberick would lose the handle. Galion would recover the ball and set up shop on their own 27-yardline. Fortunately for Bellevue, the Galion offense continued to struggle. Running the ball on first and 10, Javen could only muster a few yards on two carries. On 3 down Bellevue's Tim Keegan busted through the line to sack Tiger QB Agin, making it fourth and a long 12. Knowing how Bellevue's special teams was working, Bright this time punted the ball out of bounds. Setting up their third offensive series of the night, Deblase would hook up with Berberick for an 80-yard touch down pass play making it 27-0 Bellevue. Thompson's kick made the score 28-0 with 9:08 to go in the second period.
The Galion offense would receive the kick off and return it out to the 30-yardline to start their fifth series of the night. After an incomplete pass on the first play from scrimmage, Agin connected on a five yard pass to running back Javen making it third and five. Javen would take a hand off on the next play and would only come up with one yard on the carry. On fourth and four, Galion again would punt. Berberick would take the punt to his own 30-yardline. Flores was stopped for a one yard loss on the first play, but then broke off for a 12 yard gain giving the Redmen a first down. With two more runs for a total of 23 yards; and a five yard face mask penalty, Bellevue had a fresh set of downs at the Galion 34 yard line. That is when Flores' burst up the middle mixed with a nice spin move got him 34 yards into the end zone and extended Bellevue's lead to 34-0. Thompson's fourth PAT of the night made the score 35-0, in favor of the Redmen with 4:32 left in the second.
Galion received the kick and again it was the same old story. Bellevue's defense would not budge an inch as the Tigers were again forced to a three and out, giving Bellevue back the ball with enough time to add one more score. Starting the final scoring drive before halftime on their own 31-yardline, Flores took the hand off for a 15-yard gain and a Redmen first down. On second down Deblase decided to go to the air and he found Jordan Manlet for a gain of 14 and another Redmen first down. Flores then took the hand off from Deblase and raced 42 yards to paydirt. The score was 41-0 awaiting the extra point. It would not be an easy attempt for Bellevue as two penalties, of holding and false start, would set them back to the 24 yard line. Deblase would then hook up with tight end Doug Vollmar for the conversion, making it 43-0, heading into the locker room for half time.
Bellevue would again score on their first possession of the second half by pounding the ball with Berberick and Flores running. As 9:13 shown left in the third quarter, Flores would again score on a run of 16 yards. Thompson again added the extra point and Bellevue lead 50-0.
Galion would come out passing on their first possession of the second half. But on 3rd and 14, Agin would step back to pass and Jordan Manlet would step in front to intercept the pass. Manlet would return the ball all the way for a score, however it would be called back for pass interference. Manlet however would not be denied an INT. He would intercept a pass two plays later and this time return the ball to the Galion nine without any infractions.
This possession would belong to Tim Keegan as he would take the ball in from five yards out for the score, and give the Redmen a 57-0 lead as Thompson added the PAT. This would bring us to the end of the third quarter with Bellevue giving the crowd a blowout.
On Galion's last possession of the night, they would again go down four and out and give Bellevue back the ball. With the starters now out, Bellevue looked to their reserves to finish out the game. Mike Flores, Anthony's brother would round out the scoring, with a 1-yard run, coming with 4:43 left in the contest. The PAT was no good leaving the score, Bellevue 63 and Galion 0.
Bellevue will return to action next week in Shelby, with kick-off coming at 7:30.
