Redmen unleash offensive firepower on Rams
More than 520 All-Purpose yards leads to HUGE Redmen victory
September 17, 2005
Upper Sandusky, OH- The Bellevue Redmen traveled to Upper Sandusky Friday evening to take on the Upper Rams in the first week of Northern Ohio League action. The Wyandot County fair was in full swing with a large crowd to take in the fireworks display. However it was the out of town Redmen team who lit up the scoreboard.
Bellevue who had not returned a kickoff or punt for a touchdown since Matt Lepley returned 4 punts and 3 kickoffs for scores during the 2002 season took all of fifteen seconds to put six on the board for the visiting Redmen. Senior Anthony Flores went through the heart of the kickoff coverage team and took it the distance on an 82-yard return. Nate Thompson split the uprights and the Redmen led 7-0 with 11:45 in the first quarter.
On the fourth play of their opening series, Rams junior quarterback Kris Young fumbled with Bellevue's Tim Keegan on the recovery.
Redmen tailback Anthony Flores carried the load while taking the handoff 7 times for 31-yards. On 1st and goal on the Upper 7 Flores dashed around the left side of the line while making a move on the defender to go in for the score. Thompson tacked on the PAT and with 5:54 in the first quarter it was Bellevue 14 and Upper 0.
The Rams quickly went 3 and out forcing them to punt from their own 16-yardline. Bellevue advanced the return to the Upper 37 where again the Redmen offense would attack the defensive front or Upper. Flores rumbled 32-yards down to the 5-yardline on five carries. Keegan powered it in from 5-yards out for another first quarter score. Thompson nailed the point after and with 1:30 remaining in the opening quarter the Redmen had a 21-0 advantage.
The Rams unable to get their offense in gear was forced to punt after a near interception by junior speedster Derrick Berberick and a quarterback sack by Geoff Dendinger.
As somewhat of a surprise Berberick lined up at tailback as the Redmen took over on their own 48-yardline. Berbs (as his teammates call him) took the handoff and dashed around right-tackle and went the distance, untouched for the 52-yard touchdown run. Thompson remained prefect on the evening with another extra point as things had quickly gotten out of hand for the hometown Rams with Bellevue leading 28-0 and just nine seconds into the second quarter.
On the Redmen's next offensive series Berberick appeared to hit a homerun with a 56 yard touchdown run however the play would not stand as Bellevue was hit with a penalty for illegal block in the back. The following Bellevue possession had similar results. Berbs on 5 carries for 64-yards capped off another Redmen scoring drive with an 11-yard burst to paydirt. Thompson hit the point after and with 2:11 until the half; it was Bellevue 35 and Upper 0.
The Redmen struck quickly on the opening series of the second half. Junior quarterback Jeff DeBlase hit Berberick on a swing pass that went 65 yards for the score while aided by great downfield blocking and a nice cutback move to make the defender miss. Thompson still prefect split the uprights and it was 42-0 Bellevue and 9:59 in the third.
With still 8:02 remaining in the third the Redmen looked to leave no doubts. DeBlase hooked up with an open David Foos on a deep ball. Foos shook off the would be tackler and rumbled into the endzone. The 2-point attempt after a Redmen personal foul was no good. With more than seven minutes remaining in the third quarter the Redmen increased its lead to 48-0.
The Rams finally saw something positive go their way when Uppers Billy McBee blocked a Redmen punt to set the Rams up with their best field position of the evening on the Bellevue 18. Four plays later Kris Young crossed the goal line from 3-yards out to get Upper on the scoreboard. Nate Bair tacked on the extra point and with 2:11 left in the third it was 48-7 Bellevue.
Bellevue added their final score with 9:51 remaining in the contest with a Flores 5-yard scamper into the endzone. Key receptions by Foos and Jordan Manlet kept the drive alive. Thompson was a perfect 7 for 7 added the final PAT.
With 9:44 remaining on the clock, the Redmen brought in the junior varsity defense to let everyone get involved. Upper's offense swiftly moved downfield despite two quarterback sacks and pressure on the Rams backfield. Arin Neely ran it in form 19-yards out for Upper's second score of the night. Bair's kick was no good and the score stood at the eventual final of 55-13.
The Bellevue offense racked up an unofficial 390 yards of offense and 126 return yards. Bellevue returns to BAF Stadium next Friday to face the (0-4) Norwalk Truckers for the 107th meeting between the two schools. Upper looks to regroup with a home date verse the 2-2 Tiffin Tornadoes.
