Ashland wins their first in series vs Bellevue
Redmen struggling to get in the endzone
September 2, 2005
Ashland, OH- The Bellevue Redmen came up on the short end for the second week in a row and for the first time in five meetings verse the Ashland Arrows Friday evening.
The Arrows used the same formula as Delphos St. John's did the previous week. Make the Redmen throw the football by playing tough against the run while being successful running the ball themselves.
After a Redmen fumble on a punt return Ashland took over on Bellevue's own 26-yardline. It didn't take long as three plays later the Arrows got on the board with a 25-yard touchdown reception by junior tailback Dan Icenhour. The extra point was true and with 4:47, first quarter it was 7-0 Arrows.
Two possessions later Ashland was back in business with a short field. After marching to the Redmen 4-yardline, junior kicker Andrew Spicer missed his first of three field goals on the night.
Momentum turned quickly to the Bellevue team as the Redmen used the legs of senior tailback Anthony Flores to go 80-yards for a Redmen touchdown. The highlight of the drive was a 21-yard touchdown reception by new starting fullback Geoff Dendinger who rumbled into the endzone for six. David Foos went high above the defender and hauled in the 2-point conversion and with 1:50 remaining in the first half the Redmen had an 8-7 advantage.
A Jeff DeBlase pass was intercepted on the Redmen's next possession when a blitzing linebacker blindsided DeBlase as he was releasing the ball. The interception continued what had become a common theme for the Arrows with a short field to work with deep in Redmen territory.
The Bellevue defense held however and Spicer who had already missed two field goals missed his third from 40-yards out.
Two possessions later and working from the Bellevue side of the field the Arrows moved to the Redmen two when junior quarterback Taylor Housewright found an open Andrew Spicer for a 25-yard strike. Mike Weaver capped off the drive with a 2-yard touchdown plunge and Spicer came on to nail the point after to make it 14-8 Arrows with 11:33 in the third quarter.
The battle of field position held firm for Ashland, as they again would start deep in Bellevue territory at the Bellevue thirty. Seven plays later it was Spicer saving his best kick for last as he split the uprights from 32-yards out to push the Ashland lead to 17-8 and just under 8:00 remaining in the contest.
Bellevue unphased and showing a lot of pride and heart went 84-yards on 10 plays to the Ashland 1-yardline. On 4th and 1 however, disaster struck with a fumble on a quarterback sneak. The Arrows took over on downs and ran out the remaining minutes of the game to pickup their first victory in the series verse the Redmen.
Bellevue travels to Clyde (2-0) next Friday night in the backyard battle with the Fliers. Clyde who beat the Tiffin Tornadoes 7-0 Friday evening to improve to 2-0 has dropped the past nine straight meetings verse the Redmen.
