Speed, Speed and more of it, 31-0 Delphos over Bellevue

August 26, 2005

The Bellevue Redmen took one on the chin last night at BAF stadium falling 31-0 to Delphos St. John's. Delphos picked preseason #1 in Division 6 used their team speed to run by the Redmen on Hall of Fame night in Bellevue. Alisa Raifsnider, Bob Hart, Burnell "Curly" Hoffman, Gene Dudley, Shelley Krall (Cotterill), Jere Crosby and Stewart Behm were all introduced to the home crowd as the 2nd annual Hall of Fame inductees.

Delphos struck quickly on their first possession going 47 yards on five plays when Blue Jay running back Andrew DeWitt crossed the goaline from 2 yards out. The extra point was true and with 9:22, first quarter Delphos had taken a 7-0 advantage.

The Redmen drove to the Blue Jay 13-yardline before linebacker Michael Grubenhoff intercepted a deflected pass to end the drive and killing any momentum the Redmen had. The game was plagued by turnovers from both squads with Bellevue turning it over 3 times and Delphos having 4 of their own.

After four consecutive turnovers between both teams, Delphos struck again. Junior quarterback Nick Johnson dashed 46-yards to paydirt for another Blue Jay score. The extra point failed with 1:57 remaining in the half it was Delphos 13 and Bellevue 0.

Returning from halftime and just 1:48 into the third quarter, DeWitt went the distance for a 33-yard touchdown run. The PAT failed but the Delphos lead grew to 19-0 with 10:12 in the third quarter.

Delphos looked to end this one early on their next possession when Curtis Laudick capped off a 58-yard drive with a 5-yard score of his own. The point after kick failed again and to the surprise of everyone the score stood at 25-0 Delphos midway through the third.

The Blue Jays final score came with 7:40 remaining in the contest. DeWitt rumbled 11 yards for his third score of the evening while picking up more than 160 rushing yards on the night. If there was a weakness on this Delphos team it would have to be their kicking game which missed yet another point after attempt but the Jays would leave Bellevue with a 31-0 victory.

The Blue Jay offense looked to be in mid-season form with more than 400 yards total offense to the Redmen's 142 yards.

Bellevue looks to regroup next week at Ashland who beat the Willard Flashes 10-7 last night. There will be a 7pm start time for the game.
