Bellevue's strong second half performance lifts them past Fostoria
Bellevue returns to Fostoria for first time in 43 years
October 16, 2004
Fostoria, OH - The Bellevue football team traveled to Fostoria for the first time since 1961 last night and the end result was quite similar as the Northern Redmen beat the Southern Redmen 24-12 on a sloppy, rainy and cold night at Fostoria Memorial Stadium.
Bellevue evened the all-time series record at 6-6-1 with a strong second half performance and rushing attack led by senior tailback Greg Keys 158 yards on 28 attempts.
Fostoria opened the scoring on the mistake filled night when junior quarterback Marcus Hyde took it in from 2-yards out for the score. The two-point conversion came up short and with :19 remaining in the opening quarter Fostoria held a 6-0 advantage.
The remainder of the first half was a battle of field position. Though neither team saw the end zone the northern Redmen had a crack at a score but failed to punch it in after moving to the Fostoria 20-yard line. Bellevue had three drives stall inside the Fostoria twenty on the night, which could have blown the game wide open.
Bellevue got on the scoreboard mid-way through the third quarter when quarterback Jon Journay ran it through the heart of the Fostoria defense for a 7-yard touchdown run. Keys ran in the two-point attempt and the northern Redmen took an 8-6 lead with 4:43 left in the third quarter.
Fostoria marched right back down the field on their ensuing possession and scored when Hyde hit senior wide-out Kyle Wagner on a 20-yard touchdown pass. Senior running back Matt Talley's two-point attempt fell short as defensive lineman Dylan Fraizer made a great tackle to stop the 235-pound fullback short of the goal line. Fostoria however regained the lead with 2:12 remaining in the third with the score being 12-8.
A minute and sixteen seconds was all it took for Bellevue to answer the Fostoria score while picking up a first down on each play of the seven play 65-yard drive. Journay finished the drive with a 2-yard quarterback sneak for the score. Keys picked up the two-point attempt and the northern Redmen regained the lead with :56 remaining in the third quarter.
The Bellevue offense chewed up more than seven minutes off the clock in the final quarter with a fourteen play 65-yard drive on which the Redmen passed the ball only twice. The drive stalled however on the Fostoria 17-yardline.
The southern Redmen's fourth down prayer from their own twenty-two fell incomplete turning the ball back over to Bellevue with less than 2-minutes on the clock.
Greg Keys capped off the scoring on the night with a 15-yard dart off left tackle for the score while also picking up the two-point conversion for an end result of 24-12 in favor of the northern Redmen.
Bellevue (7-1) will now head home to BAF stadium for the final home game of the regular season to battle the undefeated Upper Sandusky Rams. The game will be for sole possession of first place in the Northern Ohio league and a possible first round home playoff game may be on the line for both teams. Fostoria (2-5) will also be playing in their final home game of the season as they host the Galion Tigers (0-8).
