Balanced Redmen attack turns lights out on Flashes
October 1, 2004

Willard, OH- The Bellevue Redmen traveled to Willard Friday night to take on the Crimson Flashes in a contest that's matched up the two teams seventy-nine times prior to the game with the Redmen holding a 45-30-4 series lead.

The Flashes won the coin-toss and elected to defer to the second half.

After a sixteen yard kickoff return the Redmen offense looked to strike early while starting at their own twenty-four yard-line. A balanced attack of five passes and five running plays pushed the Redmen across the goaline for their first score as senior wide-out Cody Koselke was on the receiving end of a Jon Journay 14 yard scoring strike. The two-point attempt was no good and the Redmen took a 6-0 lead with 6:43 remaining in the first quarter after an impressive opening drive.

The Flashes quickly was forced to punt. Bellevue, starting at their own twenty-three yardline went to the strong arm of quarterback Jon Journay. Journay hooked up with Koselke and fellow senior wide-out Jarrid Breyman for key first down receptions. Third and eight from the Flashes eighteen yard-line, Journay hit tailback Greg Keys on a screen play that went eighteen yards for the score. Co-captain Brian Palsa snagged the Journay two-point attempt and the Redmen increased their lead to 14-0 with 10:29 left until halftime.

The Bellevue defense was stellar on the evening sacking Willard quarterbacks nine times and intercepting a pass early in the fourth quarter.

To open the second half the Flashes marched down to the Bellevue twenty-six aided by junior Brandon Oney's thirty-six yard run while taking snaps at quarterback. Dan Wollenslegel and Geoff Dendinger sacked Oney on consecutive plays to bring up 4th and 20 on the Redmen thirty-seven. The 4th down conversion came up short and the Redmen took over on downs on their own twenty-five.

To seal the Flashes fate, Journay ran in from five yards out to cap off a twelve-play seventy-five yard drive. Palsa caught his second two-point conversion and with 1:23 remaining in the third quarter it was Bellevue 22, Willard 0.

The defensive heroics arose late in the 4th quarter after Willard moved deep into Bellevue territory to the Redmen twenty-five. First and ten at the twenty-five, Brian Palsa drug down quarterback Ryan Loar for a three-yard loss. Back-to-Back sacks by Palsa and Eddie Hupp on second and third down setup a long 4th and twenty-three for the Flashes. Willard coach Chris Hawkins sent in a screenplay, which was the only real successful play for the Flashes on the evening. Loar hit an open Chris Fuller who was lit up by an explosive Tim Keegan hit who read the play coming from his linebacker position.

The teams exchanged possession with no serious scoring threats as the Redmen looked to empty the benches late in the 4th quarter.

Both teams resume league play next Friday with the Flashes hosting the (3-4) Norwalk Truckers while the Redmen host the (5-1) Tiffin Tornadoes in a battle of league unbeatens.
