Redmen run wild on Tigers

Run for more than 400 yards in 67-20 blowout win September 18, 2004

Galion, OH- How often would the Redmen offense score? That seemed to be the biggest question surrounding the Bellevue football team Friday night as they traveled to Heise Park in Galion to take on the Tigers.

An explosive running game that totaled 418 yards and nine scoring touchdowns along with the sweet touch of Jon Journay's passes was just too much for the winless Tigers in a 67-20 rout.

It seemed as if the National Anthem was still being played when the Redmen got their first score. On the first play from scrimmage senior standout Greg Keys took the Journay handoff and split the-would be tacklers as he raced 62 yards for the touchdown. Journay hooked up with senior wide-out Jarrid Breyman for the two-point conversion and just twelve seconds into the contest Bellevue jumped on top 8-0.

Galion on their opening series quickly went three and out with the Redmen returning the Galion punt to the Tigers forty-nine yardline. Journay went to the air as he hit an wide open Brian Palsa for a thirty-eight yard gain. Two plays later it was Keys going in from four yards out for his second score. Wide-out Cody Koselke snagged the two-point conversion and with 9:32 remaining in the opening quarter it was Bellevue 16, Galion 0.

Again, Galion was unable to move the chains while having to punt from their own thirty. The Redmen, using eleven plays and chewing up fifty-three yards, got their third score of the game when quarterback Jon Journay called his own number while diving into the endzone from two yards out. Breyman caught his second two-point conversion and it appeared to be blown wide open in the opening quarter with the Redmen holding a commanding 24-0 led.

The Tigers refused to allow another shutout like last season's 68-0 Redmen blowout when quarterback Jimmy Fryer pitched the ball to tailback Matt Hardeman who raced down the Galion sidelines for a forty-one yard touchdown. Bobby Nicholls extra point kick was good and the score stood at 24-7 as the first quarter expired.

The Redmen failed to score on their ensuing possession after moving to the Galion forty-two.

The Tigers sent shockwaves thru the Bellevue crowd when senior Ben Blubaugh capped an eleven play seventy-six yard drive when he dashed by Redmen defenders from twenty yards out. Nicholls point after was good and with 3:30 remaining until halftime the Tigers gave their fans something to cheer about on parents night, only tailing 24-14.

Junior linebacker Cory George recovered a Galion fumble on the Tigers next possession. Eight plays and forty-two yards later it again was Journay who took it into the endzone for six. Keys added the two-point conversion to increase the led to 32-14 going into halftime.

To open the second half Galion quickly was forced to punt.

Facing third and nine from their own thirty-six Journay hit an open Greg Keys in the flats who raced sixty-four yards for an apparent score however the play was nullified by an illegal man downfield penalty against the Redmen. Now facing third and fourteen it was Breyman that came up with a big third down conversion when he hauled in a sixteen- yard reception to move the chains. Three plays later Keys rumbled twenty-eight yards to paydirt. Sophomore Nate Thompson tacked on the extra point increasing the score to 39-14 in favor of the Redmen.

This years Galion team refused to quit though when Jimmy Fyer hit tailback Matt Hardeman for a thirty-nine yard scoring strike. The extra point hold was bobbled and the kick failed leaving the score at 39-20 with 6:00 remaining in the third quarter.

Bellevue was unable to move the ball on their ensuing possession but received a gift when Bobby Nicholls fumbled the punt on Galion's thirty-five. Keys and Journay ate up the thirty-five yards and spit out another Redmen score with Journay puching in for his third scoring run of the evening. Thompson split the uprights and with 3:34 left in what seemed to be a very long third quarter the score increased to 46-20.

The Bellevue quick strike offense was at it again after forcing a Tigers punt. Greg Keys capped off a stellar performance in which he rushed for 275 yards on 21 carries and 4 scores when he blew past a motionless Tigers defense as he raced seventy-six yards for his fourth and final score of the night. Thompson remained prefect on the evening tacking on the extra point as the Redmen blew it wide open at 53-20 and 11:45 remaining in the contest.

The Tigers failed to mount any serious scoring threat as the Bellevue benches cleared to get everyone involved on the evening.

Bellevue reserves were as impressive as the starters as junior tailback Anthony Flores shook would be tacklers and raced forty-three yards for another score.

Sophomore speedster Derrick Berberick also got into the scoring column when he took a Jeff DeBlase handoff and scored on a brilliant forty yard touchdown jaunt. Thompson booted both extra points making him a prefect 5 of 5 on the night as the game would end with an impressive 67-20 Redmen victory.

Both teams resume league play next Friday when things get no easier for the Tigers as the host the (4-0) Upper Sandusky Rams. Bellevue heads home to take on the (0-4) Shelby Whippets on homecoming night.
