Redmen Continues Hex Over Clyde, 45-20.
September 10, 2004

Bellevue, Ohio- The Bellevue Redmen led by an ill Greg Keys sent the Fliers home sick Friday Night, 45-20. Bellevue's victory was the ninth straight over the Fliers after Clyde won the first two since the series between the backyard rivals was reinstated in 1994.

The first quarter saw both teams struggling to sustain drives, and a missed scoring opportunity for the Redmen. Bellevue's second offensive series began in excellent field position on Clyde's 43 following a botched snap on Clyde's punt attempt. After a couple solid runs by Keys for 19 and 11 yards respectively, Bellevue was knocking on the door at Clyde's 2. But a motion penalty and two pass incompletions enabled the Fliers to escape the threat.

Bellevue capitalized near the end of the first quarter due to Alex Malott snagging a Jared Martin offering on the Clyde 20. Following a 19-yard pass completion from Jon Journay to Jarrid Breyman, Journay called his number and sneaked in for the score. The two-point conversion courtesy of a Journay pass to Cody Koselke was good, and the Redmen led 8-0 with 0:21 remaining in the first quarter.

The next Bellevue offensive series was highlighted by Keys' big-play capabilities. Following Clyde's punt into the endzone for a touchback, Keys took the ensuing handoff, found a huge hole, and exploded down the middle for an electrifying 80-yard run. The two point conversion failed, and at 8:11 second quarter, Bellevue led 14-0.

Clyde did not take long to answer Bellevue's score. Following two solid defensive plays by the Redmen, and two Flier penalties, things looked unpleasant for Clyde on 3rd and 20 from their own 30. However, Martin threw a beautiful bomb to wide-out Jeremy Liska and ran away from the Redmen defenders for a 70 yard score. The PAT attempt failed, and at 5:18 2nd quarter, Bellevue's lead shrunk to 14-6.

Sensing Clyde was gaining momentum, Bellevue answered the call on its ensuing offensive series. The Redmen kept the drive alive following a 3rd and 10 on their 15 courtesy of a Journay 12 yard pass to Breyman. Keys again showcased his big-play potential by bursting 42 yards to the Flier 17. Three plays later Journay tossed a 13-yard strike to Koselke for the Redmen score. The two-point conversion failed, and at 2:05 2nd quarter, Bellevue had a 20-6 advantage.

Bellevue did not wait too long to strike again. David Foos intercepted a Brent Aona offering, and the Redmen were in business on Clyde's 44 right before halftime. Bellevue displayed excellent clock management during its drive, and the effort paid off as Journay again called his number and his second effort enabled him to score from the Clyde 7. The two point conversion failed, and at 0:18 2nd quarter, Bellevue led 26-6.

The Fliers and their faithful, seemingly shocked at being down 26-6 at the half, looked to regain the momentum starting the second half. After Malott and Tim Keegan sacked Aona, Clyde was staring at 3rd and 11 from their 24. However, a pass interference called on the Redmen kept the drive alive, and the Fliers turned to their big horse, Matt Guhn(6-1, 240). Guhn's punishing running style enabled him 40 yards on 4 carries climaxed by a score from the Redmen 1. Clyde's two-point conversion was successful, and at 8:22 3rd quarter, Bellevue's lead dwindled to 26-14.

Sensing Clyde was back in the game, the Flier faithful became more vocal evidenced by the Flier defense stuffing Keys on consecutive running plays. The Redmen achieved a critical first down as Journay found Breyman on an out for 12 yards. Three plays later, Keys broke the Flier hearts on a 58-yard catch and run for the score. The two-point conversion failed, and at 5:30 3rd quarter, Bellevue increased its advantage to 32-14.

Bellevue wasted no time to strike again. Following a Redmen kickoff, Koselke picked off a pass setting up Bellevue at Clyde's 28. Three plays later, Bellevue again looked to the speedy Keys to answer the call. Keys bursted into the endzone from 25 yards for his 3rd TD of the evening. The two-point conversion failed, and at 4:19 3rd quarter, Bellevue achieved a commanding 38-14 lead.

The Fliers, proving it was not going to lie down, and proving its big-play potential, answered the call 25 seconds later. Martin displayed his great athletic ability by avoiding the Redmen rush, and turned on the gas for a 74 yard score. Clyde's two point conversion failed, and at 3:54 3rd quarter, Bellevue lead 38-20.

The game's final touchdown was set up by Clyde gambling on 4th and 1 on its 33, and the Redmen defense rose to the occasion by stuffing Guhn at the line of scrimmage. Anthony Flores and Journay took turns pounding the ball on 5 plays climaxed by Journay's third rushing TD of the evening. Nate Thompson's PAT was successful, and at 9:29 4th quarter, Bellevue lead by the eventual final score, 45-20.

Both teams resume play next Friday as the Clyde Fliers look to rebound against the Perkins Pirates at the 'Campbell Street Gridiron', while Bellevue travels to Galion's Heise Park taking on the winless Tigers.
