A look at the Watterson Eagles
November 10, 2004
Bellevue, OH-The Bishop Watterson Eagles are no stranger to the Ohio High School Football playoffs with many successful years in post-season play including Regional Championships in 1997, 1999, 2001 and a State Championship in 2002.
Second year head coach Dan Bjelac has his team playing good football right now after graduating seven offensive starters from last years Regional Semi Final team.
It all begins on the offensive and defensive line for the Eagles as 6'4 260lb senior Andrew Moses (#53) anchors the line after being named to the All-Ohio team a year ago. Moses played a solid game verse a physical Clyde front last Saturday as he finished with 6 tackles for a loss and 1 interception from his defensive tackle position along with a solid game, playing center on the offensive line.
Another solid lineman to watch would be senior Anthony Reo (#66) and between him and Moses the Eagles line play has been excellent.
Quarterback Robbie Rosner (#10) can be effective but Watterson's bread and butter is its running game. Look for Bellevue linebackers and safeties to be well aware of where tight-end Alan Strange (#45) lines up as he is Rosner's favorite target and he accounted for 3 of the Eagles 5 pass completions verse the Clyde Fliers. Strange is not real fast but he has hands of glue catching everything thrown to him and he's a hard kid to bring down.
The Eagles will put at least three running backs on the field over the course of the game. Vinny DeMaria (#33), Mike Kundla (#9) and Jonathan Thomas (#25) are all about 5'10 200lbs and can be effective on any given night. DeMaria was Watterson's most effective last week with 10 carries for 67 yards and a 23-yard reception. He's also a tough kid to bring down in the open field.
On the defensive side of the ball the Eagles run a base 5-2 defense which the Redmen has seen several times this fall. Watterson's defensive front is one of the top 2 Bellevue has faced this year with Tiffin being the other. The Eagles safeties are hard-nosed linebacker types that fill fast on the run.
Watterson is a sound football team on both sides of the ball and they normally do a good job of limiting penalties. Over the past 14 seasons the Eagles have put together a record of 129 wins to 39 loses. During that same span Redmen head coach Ed Nasonti has compiled a record of 126-29 with two Regional Championships and eleven league titles of his own.
Go Big Red……!!!
