A look at the Eastmoor Warriors
November 4, 2004
Bellevue, OH-Columbus Eastmoor Academy is somewhat of an unknown heading into the Ohio High School playoffs.
The Alma Mater of former Ohio State great and two-time Heisman trophy winner Archie Griffin has only been in the playoffs twice before this season with the last time being in 1993.
The Warriors have a good number of athletes and have big play potential with some very good speed at the skilled positions. Damon Morris (#27) who is their featured running back is only 5'7 140 lbs but is extremely fast and is likely the quickest back the Redmen have faced this year.
Prince Moody is another fine athlete running the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds. Moody is mostly used inside the opponents 20 yard-line to grind out yards to the end-zone.
Naturally with two such athletes at the tailback position the Warriors offense wins ball games with their strong running game.
Expect to see some beef up front on the offensive and defensive lines with one starter being over 300lbs. Many of the offensive linemen however start on defense as well which could benefit the Redmen late in a close game. Eastmoor runs a very basic offense, running counters, traps and an outside iso while throwing in a bootleg pass and some screens. The Warriors Antoine Wrice (#11) is a fine athlete as well but is more of a threat as a runner than a passer.
The Warriors based defense is a 4-3 with a free and strong safety but they sometimes monster up. The Redmen have seen a version of a 5-2 at times and feel comfortable seeing either.
A lot of the success running the ball for Bellevue will depend on how aggressive the Redmen receivers are on blocking to help spring Greg Keys who rushed for 1,705 yards this season, which is the second highest in school history only behind Russ Kuhns 1,757 in 1997.
There shouldn't be a problem finding seats for fans from area schools, as the early word is that Eastmoor fans don't travel well and that we can only expect about 100 fans to make the trip from Columbus.
Go Big Red……!!!
