Homecoming night brings Tradition vs Tradition

October 11th 2003
By XBellevueplayar

Bellevue, OH - Friday evening, for the first time since 1962, two traditional football giants sharing the same school mascot squared off at BAF stadium. Homecoming night, over 1,100 combined victory's and bragging rights were all on the field Friday evening as the ( 1-6 ) Fostoria Redmen came into Bellevue to play the ( 6-1 ) Redmen of Bellevue. Just like in the previous eleven meetings there was plenty of scoring and to the delight of homecoming Queen Holly Sumser and King Quenton Smith it was their Redmen team winning in a 42-6 waxing of new NOL member Fostoria.

Bellevue used the legs of junior tailback Greg Keys to cover 47 yards to move the ball out to the Fostoria 49 before electing to punt on 4th and 8. Fostoria's offense, starting at their own 20 would only see the field for 3 plays as the stingy Bellevue defense held on 3rd and 5 and Fostoria was forced to punt.

It was on Bellevue's next possession that the fireworks began. Starting on their own 42, it took all of 2 plays to get the eastern Redmen on the scoreboard. A 16-yard run by senior fullback Aaron Decker and a 42-yard scoring jaunt by Greg Keys highlighted the drive. Mike Snyder's extra point attempt split the uprights and Bellevue quickly took a 7-0 lead with 6:21 remaining in the opening quarter.

Fostoria used 10 plays to cover 44 yards on their next possession moving the ball deep into Bellevue territory to the 35 yardline. Surprisingly Fostoria headcoach Tom Grine elected to punt on 4th and 8 while hoping to pin Bellevue inside the 10. The move did not payoff though as the ball rolled into the endzone bringing the ball out to the 20 and making the punt covering only 15 yards.

Starting at their own 20, the Bellevue offense marched right down the field on 12 plays to reach the endzone again. A Jon Journay 46-yard pass to Senior captain Matt Lepley and runs of 12 and 14 yards by Greg Keys highlighted the drive. With Lepley lined up at tailback on 4th and goal at the Fostoria 2 it was Lepley who bolted in for the score. The Snyder kick was true and Bellevue increased their lead to 14-0 with 8:46 left in the first half.

Again, the Fostoria offense could not find the endzone or get anything going and was forced to punt.

From their own 26 the Bellevue offense took to the air. Following carries by Decker and Keys to move the ball out to midfield it was Junior quarterback Jon Journay hitting Matt Lepley for 11 yards to move to the Fostoria 40. Two plays later it was Journay again hooking up with Lepley at the 15 and the senior standout would do the rest shaking off a would-be tackler and racing into the endzone for 6. The PAT was good and Bellevue enjoyed a commanding 21-0 lead with 2:08 remaining in the half. That's how the scoring would stand at halftime when time expired and Fostoria at midfield.

The second half began much like the first half as the Fostoria offense struggled to move the ball. After senior defensive tackle Tyler Edgington and senior defensive end Aaron Decker combined to sack quarterback Mark Echelberry for an 8-yard loss Fostoria was forced to punt.

Receiving great field position on the Fostoria 45, Bellevue wasted little time using only 2 plays as Greg Keys dashed down the sideline for another Bellevue touchdown. The PAT was good and the hometown Redmen was set on cruise control leading 28-0 with 9:29 remaining in the third.

As been the case the previous two weeks, Bellevue played inspired defense and once again forced a Fostoria punt after Aaron Decker batted down an Echelberry pass attempt at the line of scrimmage. Both teams exchanged possession after a Bellevue fumble and an interception by junior safety Brian Palsa.

The Bellevue offense again would not be denied as Journay threw a brilliant pass to Lepley for a 53 yard scoring strike. Mike Snyder came on to boot his fifth extra point to increase the lead to 35-0 in favor of the hosts.

Fostoria would take no more. Facing a possible shutout, senior tailback Ryan Hook used 2 plays to race into the endzone from 57 yards out. The 2-point conversion failed and with 5:19 left in the third the score stood at 35-6.

After exchanging possessions, Bellevue took over on their own 26. Hoping to run some clock, the Redmen offense road the backs of fullback Aaron Decker and senior tailback Shane Hamer. The drive consisted of 7 plays covering 74 yards. On the drives sixth play it was Hamer busting through the Fostoria defensive line and racing down the sideline for a 40-yard touchdown gallop. Snyder's kick was true giving the Redmen the final margin of victory to the delight of the homecoming crowd at 42-6 with 10:36 remaining in the contest.

As Bellevue started substituting players, neither team posed much of a serious scoring threat during the remaining ten minutes as two Fostoria drives stalled near the Bellevue 45.

On the night the Bellevue fans could not ask for much more out of the brilliant Redmen offense. Tailback Greg Keys ran for 200 yards on 24 carries and fullback Aaron Decker added 61 yards on 10 carries while Jon Journay completed 8 of 11 passes for 189 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Bellevue offense totaled 503 yards and the hard-nosed Redmen defense gave up only 264.

Next week Fostoria travels to Galion where both teams look for their first NOL win and Bellevue travels to Upper in hopes to still gain a share of the NOL title and secure a home playoff game.
