2003 Outlook

The Fostoria Redmen are the new kids on the Northern Ohio League block. The Redmen move to the NOL from the Great Lakes League in 2003. Fostoria is led by head coach Tom Grine who has a 23-38 record entering his 7th season at the helm and they are coming off of a 5-5 campaign. Coach Grine has several holes to fill on this year's edition of the Redmen. Only 6 lettermen are on the varsity roster, which has 41 players in the upper 3 grades. A large class of 23 Freshman may be called on to add depth. The 6 letter winners; Trey Garcia, Christian Leal, Sam Echelberry, Alex Shiff, Joe Morton, and Vinnie Reinhart will obviously play huge roles both on and off the field for the Redmen. Many starters, on both sides of the ball, must be replaced if Fostoria hopes to have a successful debut season in the NOL. Also, it appears the Redmen will have several two-way players so conditioning will be a key to this season's team. Coach Grine will have to count on inexperienced underclassmen to fill some of the holes and also back up the lettermen. The cupboard however is not bare. Christian Leal should be one of the top athletes in the league this season. He can play quarterback, receiver, defensive end, and punter. He will draw the attention of opposing coaches. The lines on both sides of the ball have good size and Joe Morton will be a top two-way lineman. A change of scenery and the element of surprise may also work to the Redmen's advantage. Finally, the tradition of the Fostoria football program and their 730 career wins can not be overlooked. Tradition alone makes Fostoria one of the top NOL football schools. Tradition can only carry a team so far, the players must do the rest. While thin on experienced players, Fostoria has young players eager to be a part of that tradition. How quickly they develop will tell the story on this season.

Quarterback:
Senior Christian Leal (5'10", 185) and Junior Mark Echelberry (6'2", 160) are in the running to replace Drew Baumann as the signal caller for the Redmen in 2003. There is not much varsity quarterbacking experience amongst these two as Leal played wide receiver last season and Echelberry only attempted three varsity passes in 2002.

Running backs:
Graduation hit the Redmen backfield hard, as the top five ground gainers departed. Senior Alex Shiff (5'7", 155) is the leading returning rusher having gained 46 yards on 9 carries in 2002. Also in the mix at tailback are Senior Ryan Hook (5'10", 180) and Junior Sam Echelberry (6'1", 175). Echelberry gained 31 yards on just 5 carries in 2002. Competing for time at fullback will be Senior Jake Reinhart (6'1", 190), Junior Matt Talley (6'0", 195), and Sophomore Gavin Feucht (5'8", 174), none of whom had a varsity rushing attempt in 2002.

Receivers:
If Senior Christian Leal does not get the starting nod at quarterback, he will still be a significant player on the Redmen offense. He will be a starting receiver for the Redmen. Leal is the leading returning receiver, with 10 catches for 166 yards and one touchdown a year ago. Three other players, Senior Neil Podach (6'2", 180), Junior Kyle Wagner (5'10", 160), and Sophomore Marcus Hyde (5'10", 170), are also serious contenders for starting receiver roles. Three players are also battling it out for the tight end job. Juniors Seth VanHoose (6'0", 180), Ryan Fauls (6'2", 170), and Eric Brenner (5'11", 170) all look to see action at tight end.

Offensive line:
Seniors Joe Blake (6'5", 305) and Vinnie Reinhart (6'3", 270) make for imposing bookend tackles for the Redmen line. Junior Joe Martinez (6'1", 250) looks to backup Blake and Reinhart. At guard, Senior Joe Morton (5'11", 235) and Junior Jacob Mizen (6'1", 230) look to be the starters. Senior Shane Parsons (5'8", 168) appears to be the leading reserve guard. At center, Senior Tommy Crowe (5'9", 190) leads the way with Senior Richard Costilla (6'1", 260) in the mix as well.

2003 DEFENSE

Written by Gumcoach

Defensive line:
Joe Morton and Joe Martinez are the leading contenders to start at defensive tackle. Matt Talley is likely the leading backup to Morton and Martinez. Coach Grine appears to be looking for speed at defensive ends as Christian Leal and Sam Echelberry are the top candidates at that position. Ryan Fauls also looks to see playing time at end for the Redmen. Shane Parsons looks to get the nod at nose guard with Junior Billy VanScyoc (6'0", 186) spelling him.

Linebackers:
Seth VanHoose, Gavin Feucht, Jake Reinhart, and Tommy Crowe are the top contenders at linebacker. Junior Matt Goddard (5'9", 175), Sophomore Jason Haase (5'11", 190), and Freshman Mike Tyson (6'0", 165) are also linebacking candidates. They will help to add depth and spell the starters if needed. The linebacking corps has several two-way players and also looks to be somewhat thin in numbers.

Secondary:
Senior Trey Garcia (5'6", 165) and Junior Shawn Pierce (5'10", 158) appear to have the inside track to start at cornerback. These two could be key players for Coach Grine who will have several two-way players. Garcia and Pierce likely will concentrate only on defense and should have some of the freshest legs on the Redmen defense. Senior Marcel Payne (6'1", 161) and Sophomore Marcus Hyde will be the reserves at corner. Alex Shiff and Ryan Hook are the likely starters at the two safety spots. They will be backed up by Neil Podach and Kyle Wagner. Several Sophomores and Freshmen could also make their mark in the secondary.

Special teams:
Christian Leal and Billy VanScyoc are in competition for the punting duties. For the place kicking job, Matt Talley and Eric Brenner are top contenders. Look for one of the team's best athletes, possibly Leal, Sam Echelberry, or Alex Shiff to handle punt and kickoff returns for the Redmen.

"How They Look"

- An opposing NOL team's head coach sizes up the Fostoria Redmen

"Fostoria should be an outstanding foe for NOL squads. They have an excellent coaching staff with a great Football Tradition. I look for them to have great speed in their backfield with a disciplined defense. Scouting them is very important as we have little history with them and getting a feel for what they do on both sides of the ball will be essential to our success against them."
